Music video inspirations

I have taken inspiration for my music video from many different artists and videos, this allows me to gain a wider view of the music industry and understand what draws in audiences and helps make artists successful and wider renounced in the industry. Inspirations are key to creating a music video as it allowed me to gain and develop ideas to put within my own music video, helping create a successful, yet unique product.

In one republics - counting stars the video represents the artist as very down to earth and like an everyday person due to the use of miss en scene, the setting, I found that the artist performing to no one in a worn down basement very inspirational as it shows that they do not believe they are above anyone else, infact, toward the end of the video are seen to be below all the everyday people, helping the audience relate to them as they do not feel they are better than their fans and are real people that you can relate to as an audience, helping create a relationship between the artist and fan, meaning that the song (and future songs) will become more successful as the audience can enjoy it more, this is the effect we want to have on our audience as we want it to be successful and the key to this is to create a relationship with the audience, we will create this effect by putting the artist in every day settings such as the kitchen, back garden, fields, pub, etc, all places that everyday people know and are in during everyday life, this helps them understand that the artist is just a normal everyday person that goes about her life the same way as everyone else. I will do this by using a bedroom as the first setting, showing she is just like everyone else and does not need to show off wealth and fame throughout the video.

From this music video I have taken the inspiration of style, this video includes a mix of both, performance and narrative, I found this inspirational as I feel the mix is perfect as the audience want to see the artist performing to see their talent and how they act whilst they perform, however, they do not want to watch this for four minutes straight as it becomes tedious and the audience will stop watching due to it being the same thing over and over again, we want to make sure our audience follow an interesting narrative that keeps them engaged in the music video but we also want to show off our artists talent and showcase her to the target audience, using lots of shots of her so that they can recognise her face which allows her to become wider renounced. I will include both, performance and narrative within my video, narrative of the artist reminiscing over times she had with her boyfriend and performance with her singing.

I would like to represent the artist as natural and down to earth to the audience, I want them to see her purity and that she is a good role model, by using a natural setting like the beach, this inspired me as it will allow the artist to portray to the audience her personality and make her more like able due the fact that it shows how caring and 'normal' she is, not showing off her stardom and being able to stay like an everyday person even though she has become a big star now, this allows her to create a relationship with the audience as they respect her for not letting the fame get to her head and 'keeping her feet on the ground' meaning that the audience can relate to her more and will create a relationship with her easier as she is much more like an everyday person in comparison to other artists. I will use settings such as the fields during scenes to show the artists personality as down to earth and caring within my own music video.

I would like the music video to be of the indie genre, I feel this is the best genre to use to relate to the audience, it is the most down to earth music with lots of artists that are just normal people, this helps the artist and target audience create relationships and helps bring the audience closer to their idols, fans can relate to the lyrics of the song and therefore allows them to enjoy and really engage into the song and therefore the audience are more likely to enjoy the artists music and feel closer to the artist as they feel like they have gone through the same experiences and that they are similar people, this allows the artist to give off the effect that they were once in the same position as their audience, the audience like this as it gives them hope of becoming famous and a renounced name, which they want as it will help them to succeed their dream in life, the artist gives them hope and for this reason they enjoy it as they get a glimmer of hope.

I will use camera shots such as the close up to show the artists face to the audience as much as possible, trying to drill her face into their head, forcing them as much as possible to memorise her face, this will allow her to become a bigger artist as she can be recognised by a wider audience, this in turn allows her to be listened to by a wider range of people as her fans will advertise her, by knowing her face they will feel like they know her personally and that they would recognise her straight away in public if she was opposite them, this is important for the artist as if the audience do not recognise her face then they will not watch music videos she is involved in which will prevent her from becoming a wider renounced artist and spreading her music globally, therefore this will be a priority as it will help not only sell her current song, but future songs as well.

I will use editing techniques such as fast editing to show how time has past and that the artist still has feelings for her partner and is still reminiscing over the good times they shared, helping the audience sympathise for the artist and create a relationship with her, this will allow the artist to have a long career and have a successful song and therefore become wider renounced within the indie genre and music industry, allowing the artist to gain a wider audience and be more successful. I will include fast paced editing within my video during scenes in London, I will keep it simple and use people walking past in London as a fast paced editing scene, this will symbolise the pain she is still feeling after so much time and helps the audience emphasise toward the artist.

Three songs we are considering for our music video production are

  • Gabrielle Aplin - Panic Cord
  • Birdy - Wings
  • Lana del rey - Once upon a dream
We will have group meetings to share our ideas and catch up on how we are doing as a group, allowing us to improve ideas on our video and advertising material, by doing this as a group we can use the best of everyones ideas and have a wider look at the work instead of just our own view, allowing us to see it from different perspectives. The use of inspirations will help improve the video as a whole, by developing the inspirations I can create a unique, yet conventional and successful music video that will engage the target audience and draw in a wider audience for the artist

  1. You have provided an overall basic analysis of your music video inspirations as although you have mentioned videos and their content that has inspired you, you haven't always explained how you will try and incorporate this.

    You need to:
    1) Elaborate on your intro by explaining the importance of inspirations etc.
    2) Make sure for each example you state specifically what you have found inspirational and why
    2) Explain how you will incorporate each inspiration into your music video, with an analysis of what this creates for the audience and how it is conventional or not of the genre
    3) Include an example of editing
    4) Include all music videos/screen shots
    5) Elaborate on conclusion by stating how using inspirations from music videos will hopefully help your group produce a more successful product.
