Planning cinematography

Cinematography is key in indie music videos, it allows the artist to create an image for themselves within the music video through the different shots, certain shots allow for the audience to create a relationship with the artist as they feel they get to know the artist better and begin to enjoy the music more and become more successful and wider renounced, therefore becoming a bigger imagine/idol to their audience, it also allows the audience to see the true emotion the artist is feeling and therefore become closer with them and build relationships with them .

The first shot that we will use is the close up, this will be used during the shots in which she is with her boyfriend and is showing her emotions and what she is truly thinking, this is conventional to the indie genre as it allows the audience to understand her true emotion without her speaking and explaining her emotion, therefore making the audience feel like they know her better as they can see what she is feeling even though she is not speaking, this builds relationships with the audience as they feel like they are close friends with her, the indie genre usually tries to get the audience to feel like their artist is down to earth so the audience can warm to them more, this represents the artist as an open person that shares her stories and does not try to hold any secrets form her audience and therefore makes her seem more likable and down to earth, therefore making it more likely she will become more successful due to the close relationships she will build with the audience.

The next shot is a long shot, this will be used during the scenes with both the boyfriend and the girl or any other characters involved, this will be used in scenes such as the picnic scene to help show what is going on in the narrative and keep the audience informed on the story line, we need this so  that the audience can see the full story and emphasise with the artists position and feelings, helping them build a closer relationship with the artist, they again feel like nothing is being hidden from them as they can completely see what is going on around the story, making the artist seen more truthful and open, making our artist seem down to earth and 'normal' to her target audience, making her more relatable and likable to her audience, this is conventional to the indie genre as the artists aim to build close relationships with their audience and make the audience feel like they are loved and appreciated by the artist. The long shot will help represent the artist as an open, honest person who is forward with her audience and will not hide anything from her fans. It will allow the audience to relate with the artist through recognising locations as well, if the shot is used in the fields then indie fans will be able to relate as they are very outdoory, nature loving people and will see this as a common intrest with the artist as she is clearly the same way.

We will use zooming in as well, this will be used to show the full narrative first and then the face and emotion of the artist as it zooms in, we will use this in scenes such as the pub scene in which she flirts with another boy, it will have all three of them in shot and then zoom in to just the artist and the other boy, cutting the boyfriend out and showing how she is feeling at that time, cutting him off and out of the conversation right in front of him, showing the struggles of their relationship, it will also be used when she is looking at souvenirs to relive the memories, as i zooms in the surrounding will change, making the memories seem real, this is conventional in the indie genre as the narrative is based around real life issues and the artist wants to make the video as realistic and life like as possible to keep the audience engaged in the story, giving them a chance to emphasise with the artist and enjoy the music as they can relate to it, this will represent the artist as regretful of the past and distraught about what she has done, as she is trying to relive and go back in time, we will be able to see this in her facial expressions and the way the scene cuts from her bedroom to the memory like it is being done all over again for the first time, this makes the audience emphasise with her as they can see she is upset over what she has done and clearly loved her boyfriend but made a mistake and will now have to pay for it, which causes emotion within the audience as they connect to the couple and was willing them to do well.

Panning will be used in scenes such as the pub scene in which the new boy interferes with the relationship to show how casually he approaches it and that she almost invites him over and he is not stopped by her at any time, this will help the audience understand that the artist is also interested and throughout the whole pan she does not move or shoo him off, instead she stays and waits for him, this is conventional to the thriller genre as it usually wants to get across to the audience how the artist is feeling at each point of the video and therefore allows them to build a relationship with her, this puts them in the artists shows and they can feel how she is feeling and get where she is coming from, it represents the artist as unfaithful and having a weakness, although this is not a good trait t allows the audience to see that she does in fact have her own flaws, like ever normal person, making her more relatable to the audience and seem more down to earth, this makes her more likable to the audience as they feel like she is achievable to copy and act like, and therefore she becomes an idol as well.

The final shot will be a shallow focus shot, this will be used during the bonfire shot at the beginning where the boyfriend and the artist are close to each other and are loving and caring toward each other, this shows that their only care in the world is each other and they do not care what others think of them, this is conventional as they want the audience to focus on the artist in the indie genre, this allows the audience to not get distracted by the background and therefore makes it more likely the will memorise the artists face and therefore makes it more likely for the artist to become successful, this represents the artist as loving and caring toward her boyfriend, making her seem like a person who is clearly compassionate which the audience like to see, making them like her more as she seems like she has a heart and a personality and is just acting like herself, and not the way she thinks people want her to act, showing she has no secrets to hide from her audience which warms them to her.

The camera shots allow the audience to focus purely on the artist and feel like the artist is the main focus point with shots like close up, zoom in and shallow focus, this makes it seem like the artist is closer to the audience and isn't hiding anything, helping build the relationship between the artist and audience, shots such as long shot and panoramic allow the audience to see the full story and again makes it look the nothing is being hidden as they can see the full surrounding and see that nothing is to be focused on apart from the artist and therefore makes it more likely they will memorise her, this will appeal to the target audience as it makes the artist seem more down to earth and appealing to her audience due to the clear loving and caring personality she shows on camera, also it will make them see that she does not have to hide her personality to impress people and will make them respect her as a person and see her as an idol

  1. This is a sound analysis overall of your chosen camera techniques, as you have stated what you will use and when, with a good explanation as to why. You have considered how the artist can build a relationship with the TA through the use of different camera techniques, and have thought about some of the connotations.

    You need to:
    1) Elaborate on what each camera technique creates and why
    2) Explain how and why it is conventional (or not) of the genre
    3) Elaborate on the artist's representation
    4) Check SPAG
