Planning individual magazine advert

A magazine advert is key to promoting the artist and their albums as it helps the audience see important information and see when the dates of certain dates for gigs, albums or singles, it also allows the audience to see what upcoming events are happening for the artist and allow them to follow the artists life and consume them (buy tickets or their albums/songs), the audience can see key information and do not need to read through a load of irrelevant advertising to see the information, instead it is straight to the point and informs the audience, therefore they stay engaged and don't stray away due to boredom, I will be creating a magazine advert for our artists new album (promoting her hit song which our artist will be performing for the music video), this advert will use the bright colours to draw in the audiences attention and then the straight to the point on information, making it more likely that the info will stick in the audiences head.

We have used certain characteristics such as red on the artists checkered jumper to represent the love she shares with her boyfriend as well as the danger ahead in their relationship, allowing the audience to foresee their break up and fell sympathy for the artist, helping create a relationship between her and the audience as they can relate to her, we have made the artist conform to the indie genre conventions with things such as natural settings (shown in the grass background), also we will use bright, flamboyant personality which draws the audience in and makes them like her and want to listen to her current and future work, making her more successful and wider renounced, this is conventional within the indie genre as artists want to build relationships with their fans in order to become successful and gain a fanbase to help them gain popularity. We will use images of her memories with her boyfriend for the video to make up her face, this will show how she wants to relive the experiences she had and how they are always on her mind and not allowing her to move on with her life, this allows the audience to relate to her and build a relationship with her. The artist will be placed in the centre of the advert to help the audience focus on the artist, making it more likely that the audience will memorise the artists face, therefore making it more likely that she will become wider renounced and more successful, the artists name will be in the biggest font to make it stick in the audiences mind which will give her a better chance of being successful, the language used will include things such as 'hit debut album' to really draw the audiences attention to the artist and make them read the advert due to being engaged into the poster quickly, and therefore being interested in her work and wanting to help her succeed.

The audience build a close relationship with the artist as she will use all possible techniques to relate to the audience and therefore build a close bond with them, helping them support her and want her to succeed, making it more likely for her to succeed and do well as an artist.

The use of 'hit debut single' shows it was a success and therefore draws in a wider audience as they see she has done well and is enjoyed by a large audience, therefore the target audience are drawn in and look at it, giving it a greater chance of success and more chance of gaining a wider fanbase.

This has allowed me to prepare for the poster I will create for our artist as it let me plan how I will set out the poster to make it as effective as possible and help her become as big an artist as possible and reach as wide an audience as possible, planning is key for this and is important for our artists success, this has helped us understand what kind of pictures our artist needs to have on her poster as the research and planning has allowed us to see what is the most effective and fits the style of the poster.

Planning editing styles

A variety of editing styles are key to keeping the audience interested and engaged in the music video, they allow the audience to see different takes on the moment and stops boredom of a certain scene setting in within the audience, it also allows the artist to represent the scene in a certain way, e.g- to show a certain mood within the scene, allowing the audience to sympathise and relate to the artist, showing that they understand what the artist is going through and what the artist is trying to show to the audience.

The first editing technique we will use is a filter which will create an effect, making it look as if the scene is through the view of a camera, this will be used during the scene in which the boy (which the artist flirts with, which then annoys the boyfriend) is taking a picture of the couple having a picnic over the fields, it will end up being a point of view shot, this is conventional as it shows the artist closer up, through another view, allowing the audience to memorise her face/her as an artist, this is conventional to the genre as it is common for indie artists to show their face as much as possible to the audience to help them memorise the artists face to help sell the artists products, also this filter will make her more relatable will be an everyday camera look, sowing she does not use fancy, over the top cameras, which is an effect artists want to create and try to regularly, which is why it is a conventional technique, this represents the artist as down to earth and an everyday person, relatable to the audience she has aimed her music toward, this allows the audience to relate to the artist as they can see she doesn't act any differently to them and is extremely down to earth. This is good for the artists image as it will make her more likeable in the audiences view. This connotes the fact that she is nostalgic as it shows that these are just memories and not current times, showing she's is still reminiscing over old memories and wishing she could return to them.

The next editing technique is the shot reverse shot, this will be used during the pub scene when the second boy comes over and starts chatting to the artist, right in front of the boyfriend, it will show each persons expressions during the scene, this is conventional as it shows close ups, meaning the emotion of the persons face can be recognised fairly easily and therefore helps the audience understand the emotion of the scene and how the artist is feeling, this is common within the indie genre as it helps the audience see the artists true feelings without her speaking, making them feel like they know her better as they can see how she feels just through her face, also showing how they should feel as the audience, this helps the audience engage into the video and enjoy it more due to this, this style of editing represents the artist as down to earth and 'normal' due to showing emotion like everyone else and not hiding it, showing how upfront she is and that she has nothing to hide from her audience, making her more likeable and respectable in the audiences eyes. This represents the artist as emotional and as a close friend to the audience as they feel like they can see how she feels without her speaking, making it feel like they've known her for years and are close with her. This shows the artists true feelings about the current situation and her situations she was previously in allowing the audience to relate to her emotions and see how she is actually feeling in that situation without her stating it.

Next is fast paced editing, this will be used for the filler scenes as well as the final bonfire scene in which the artist is chucking all the souvenirs into the fire and burning them, this is conventional as it shows how the artists mind is racing and that she is distraught and cannot think straight or steadily due to the overrunning of emotion, this is conventional as it is common within the indie genre to emphasise emotions of the artist to help the audience relate and see their vulnerablitiy, this therefore allows the audience to symphasise with her, the effect that most indie artists want to create within their video, helping the audience understand the narrative which is a common aim within the indie genre, this represents the artist as upset and that she feels the relationship speed by and that it went downhill so quickly and unexpectedly, this helps the artist relate to the audience as they can see she is just as emotional and invests just as much into her relationship as them and therefore is just as heart broken when a relationship ends, helping them sympathise with her. This connotes the overflow of emotion the artist has and how overcome she is by all that has happened, this helps the audience sympathise with the artist and relate to her due to seeing she is similar to her audience due to feeling the same emotions as them after a break up.

Last is the montage editing, this will be used in the filler memory scenes to help show the many enjoyable and loving times they shared which makes the audience realise how in love they are and makes the audience want them to do well and hope that they last as a couple, this is conventional as the audience attach themselves to the couple and feel real emotion when the artist and boyfriend break up and helps them engage in the film, this is conventional as indie artists often create relatable storylines to use within their video to make the audience feel more involved and closer to the artist, this is what the artists aim to do, make the audience gain a real interest in the events within the video and feel real emotions, this represents the artist as an emotional wreck and showing how down to earth and up front she is as she is hiding nothing and is showing true emotions to the audience which they can understand and sympathise with. This shows that the artist is still thinking about her previous relationship and has not got over her ex boyfriend and still has an emotional attachment with him, the audience can relate to this as they can see she truly was in love, helping them see how similar to an everyday normal person she is.

The audience can relate to the artist through the editing as it shows how down to earth and relatable she is and that she does not feel she is better than other people or that the audience are not as good as her, the editing styles also allow the audience to sympathise with her in certain situations and understand the emotions she is feeling, planning the editing is key, researching into editing conventions can help the artist understand what the audience can relate to and can help them create a successful and conventional music video.

Planning artist image

Artist representation is essential in a music video as it help portray which gerber the artist is and therefore will help decide which audience she draws in through the way she is represented, it also makes the audience more or less likely to remember her and therefore more or less likely to be successful within her target audience, it also shows her as a person and allows the audience to decide whether they like her personality or not, which also contributes to the success she has and how widely renounced she is/how wide her audience is.

The first costume she will wear are her dungarees, red lipstick, to show the danger they are getting into and also representing love between them, her hair will be wavy and she will wear boots. This will be used in the train station scene where her and her boyfriend are inside an abandoned train station and are just roaming around new places, she also wears a back pack to show the journey she is on and the freedom she feels she has when she is with her boyfriend. Dungarees are extremely conventional to the indie genre as it is a common item of clothing in the indie genre, it represents how basic and laid back their music is in the indie genre, the image helps represent our artist as laid back and down to earth as she is not overdressing in her videos and wears what normal, everyday people wear, this helps the audience build a relationship with her as she is made to feel more approachable and likeable. This costume follows the indie convention as it is commonly used within indie videos and helps portray the artist as an everyday, day to earth person, helping the audience relate to her as they see how down to earth she is and feel they can relate to her.

The second costume is the green camo jacket along with a black top, boots and shorts, she will also have wavy hair and a natural look with her make up. This will be used in the scene where her and her boyfriend are over on the fields, enjoying themselves and having a picnic, this shows that she is part of the world around her and is a free spirit, but also the darker colours portray the upcoming events, when the new boy comes onto the scene and begins to flirt with the artist, slowly distancing the artist and her boyfriend from each other and creating friction. This outfit is conventional to the indie genre as it shows the artist as down to earth/ a earth loving person, this allows the audience to see what a good person the artist is and take an instant liking to them. This represents the artist as a good person and someone who cares about the environment, it also shows how down to earth and normal she is as a person and does not see herself as better than others, but also that she has a darker side and is not all nice, which creates a shock within the audience but also makes her more likeable to some and it shows that she has some downfalls like everyone else and she is not perfect, again making her seems more approachable and down to earth, therefore it is conventional as it follows the typical indie genre theme and makes the audience warm toward her due to seeing her real personality and relating to her due to seeing how down to earth she is.

The third costume is a checkered shirt, ripped jeans, with natural make up and plaited hair, this will be during the kitchen scene in which the artist and boyfriend are enjoying themselves and play fighting whilst making cakes. This is conventional as it shows how confident she is of herself and how up front and doesn't hide anything from her audience, indie artists want to create this image for themselves as the fans can then create relationships with their artists through this and create closer bonds, this makes them more likely to be successful and become bigger artists. This costume helps represent the artist as down to earth and up front with her audience, it also shows how outgoing she is and that she is a true and natural person, the ripped jeans show how torn she is inside and that, although she is happy on the outside, she isn't 100 percent committed inside and that she has her own flaws as well. This follows the indie convention as it shows that she is emotionally broken and therefore the audience can relate to her and sympathise with her due to seeing how much pain she is in, helping them bond with her.

The fourth costume is her in an oversized jumper and her hair plaited with flowers. This will be done during the garden scene in which she and her boyfriend are watching a movie in a cinema like setting they have made in the garden. This is a conventional outfit as it shows the artist as relaxed and not afraid of her true image, and will let it out to the audience. This represents the artist as down to earth and natural, also peace/earth loving and relaxed in her true image, which is inspirational to the audience as it helps them truly appreciate their own body and image and helps them come out their own shells. This follows the indie convention as it shows her audience she doesn't feel she is better than her audience and shows truly how down to earth she is.

The last costume is her in pjs and messy hair, this is in the scene where she is going through all her souvenirs with her boyfriend and reminiscing over past experiences and the enjoyment they have over the years and what she misses about him. This is conventional as it shows the artist as comfortable in their own image and inspires her audience to be confident within themselves, making the artist a role model to her audience and therefore more likely to become successful. This represents the artist as confident and not having to dress us to feel like she needs to dress up to impress people, this shows her as confident and outgoing, as well as up front with her audience as she is not hiding anything. This helps the audience relate to her as it follows indie conventions, they can see how down to earth she is and that she hides nothing from her fans, helping them bond and build a relationship with the artist.

Our audience can relate with our artist due to feeling like she is down to earth and like an everyday person, this makes the audience feel like they can approach her and she does not feel she is above herself, also we show flaws to her, making her seem more achievable and realistic to her audience. This allows her to seem a more likeable person and not as unachievable, we will also make her a role model to her audience, so that they aspire to be like her, making her more likely to be recognised by a wider audience and therefore more successful. Planning has allowed us to grasp, as a group, how we will create this specific image for our artist and why we will create this certain image, by making this image she will become a more successful artist and wider renounced

Lyric analysis

Analysing the lyrics of our song allows us to truly understand what the artist is trying to say and portray within her music, this helps us come up with ideas of what to put into our song and understand what the artist really wants the audience to feel, this again, helps us understand what to include within the music video and therefore help us create an accurate representation of our artist and create the same effect on our audience as the artist we are trying to recreate does on her audience, making it more likely that our artist will become successful and widely renounced and therefore she can sell her music to a wider target audience.

The hidden meaning of of our song is that as much as a couple are in love, there is always a chance that one will mess it up and sometimes you can be too nice, our group got together and went through the lyrics of the song, discussing our interpretation of each part and how it could be shown in a visual context, this helped us understand what was meant by the artist and what we wanted to say to our audience, genre conventions we will use will include a love narrative, due to the hidden meaning we got from the song being about relationships, we will also use fairy lights within the scene in the garden, this is conventional within the indie genre, we will use this to represent the happiness and fulfilment her boyfriend clearly gives her, we could see this in the lyrics while analysing it, we could also see the distress she was in after upsetting her boyfriend as she goes through the souvenirs, we want the audience to see this in the video, finally we will use the convention of red colours, we will get the artist to wear red lipstick in some scenes as well as red clothing, this will represent the danger and love within the story which can be seen within the lyrics of the song.

We will use low angles to show the authority of the artist, this is showing that she is the one bringing the relationship to an end and the boyfriend has no power over it, we can see she is the dominant one through lyrics such as "maybe I wanted you to change", this shows she was the one that waned him to change for her, not what he wants to do, the audience look up to the artist as see her as an idol

Another is the two shot, we will use this to show the togetherness of the couple and how inseparable they are, we get this from lyrics saying how nice he is and constantly praising him and we want to show the audience how much they are in love. This allows the audience to emphasise toward the artist as they can see how in love she is and the emotion the artist has put into the song.

The first editing style we will use is fast paced editing, this will be to show the speed the relationship has gone at and how she wishes she could live every moment again, showing how much she loved it and loved him, we can see this through the lyric "holding onto memories of you and me. This editing style will allow the audience to emphasise toward the artist as they can see how as time went by, she still is in love with him.

Shot reverse shot will be used, this is during the scenes in which both the boyfriend and artist are in the same scene together, this will be used to show the love/affection they have for each other, but will also show the upset of the boyfriend during the pub scene, seeing the emotions of the artist will allow the audience to feel closer to the artist and understand them as a person better, helping build relationships between the audience and artist.

The first mise en scene we will use is dark lighting, this will show the darkness in the relationship has and that underneath there is conflict and anger within the relationship, this will show the audience that there is darkness underneath the seemingly loving relationship between the artist and boyfriend. This will create a bond between the artist and audience as they will see the pain she is feeling and therefore emphasise toward her.

Next is iconography like fairy lights, these will be used to show the light within the bad times and the happiness the boyfriend brings her although there is a darkness hidden. This will help the audience see the true story behind the relationship and that it will not work out, however much the artist wants it to, therefore they sympathise toward the artist and truly relate to her, helping create a relationship between the artist and audience.

Thirdly the setting will be in places to do with nature such as fields and back gardens, this shows how down to earth and pure the artist is, helping the audience take a liking to her, then we have red clothing/lip stick, this shows the danger their relationship is in but also shows the love they share toward each other and what they really think of each other.

For costume we will get the artist to wear lighter clothing during the first half of the song and then darker clothing for the second half, to show the darkness and sadness during the second part and how happy and loving the relationship was in the first half of the song. This will help the artist show her audience how she truly feels without words, helping them bond with her and truly understand how she feels, therefore they are closer to her and can relate to her.

Finally there will be a use of facial expressions to show the love between her and her boyfriend, the audience can see the true emotion in their face and can see what they are truly thinking. They will see that she is truly saddened by the breakdown of the relationship and therefore they will feel closer to her as they can see how she feels without her speaking, this causes a close bond and therefore the audience and artist create a truly close relationship.

We will use narrative to show the artists life with her boyfriend and the relationship they share, this helps the audience understand the true emotion they share and then lets the audience connect to them and will them to do well, also we will use performance with the artist playing the guitar whilst singing, this shows the audience that the artist is truly talented and has raw ability.

We wish to create a relationship between the artist and audience by showing them an insight into the artists relationship and lets them really understand the emotion of her, allowing them to emphasise with her and truly get to grips with who she truly is and her personality. The audience will have a truly close bond with the artist as they can see how she feels without her speaking, this makes them feel like they truly know her and therefore they build a relationship with the artist.

We have used lots of genre conventions to target our audience, this attracts the audience that we want and enjoy the music as it is the correct music for their taste, and they will therefore follow the artists music and she will become more popular and become wider renounced within her target audience. Using genre conventions lets the audience recognise it as an indie video, therefore they are more likely to be drawn in and engaged by it, helping make the song and artist successful in turn, this is important as if this is not achieved then the longevity of a successful career for the artist will not be achieved and the artist will die down over time.

The annotations will help us understand what we are doing and truly create our ideas, we will use these annotations to help us understand what we are filming part by part and why we are doing it, this allows us to truly get why the target audience enjoy the music and make them stick with the artist

The lyrics appeal to the audience as they relate to normal relationships of everyday people, helping her audience relate, this shows how down to earth she is and that she is like an everyday person, the relatable lyrics of an unsuccessful relationship allows the audience to see how the artist is just the same as the audience and that she is just living life like them, helping them warm toward her as a person.

The style of video is performance and narrative, I will include both due to it needing to be a mix of both style to help make the video engaging for the audience and therefore they stay interested in the video and overall enjoy the video more, helping make the artist and song more successful within the indie genre and music industry

Planning cinematography

Cinematography is key in indie music videos, it allows the artist to create an image for themselves within the music video through the different shots, certain shots allow for the audience to create a relationship with the artist as they feel they get to know the artist better and begin to enjoy the music more and become more successful and wider renounced, therefore becoming a bigger imagine/idol to their audience, it also allows the audience to see the true emotion the artist is feeling and therefore become closer with them and build relationships with them .

The first shot that we will use is the close up, this will be used during the shots in which she is with her boyfriend and is showing her emotions and what she is truly thinking, this is conventional to the indie genre as it allows the audience to understand her true emotion without her speaking and explaining her emotion, therefore making the audience feel like they know her better as they can see what she is feeling even though she is not speaking, this builds relationships with the audience as they feel like they are close friends with her, the indie genre usually tries to get the audience to feel like their artist is down to earth so the audience can warm to them more, this represents the artist as an open person that shares her stories and does not try to hold any secrets form her audience and therefore makes her seem more likable and down to earth, therefore making it more likely she will become more successful due to the close relationships she will build with the audience.

The next shot is a long shot, this will be used during the scenes with both the boyfriend and the girl or any other characters involved, this will be used in scenes such as the picnic scene to help show what is going on in the narrative and keep the audience informed on the story line, we need this so  that the audience can see the full story and emphasise with the artists position and feelings, helping them build a closer relationship with the artist, they again feel like nothing is being hidden from them as they can completely see what is going on around the story, making the artist seen more truthful and open, making our artist seem down to earth and 'normal' to her target audience, making her more relatable and likable to her audience, this is conventional to the indie genre as the artists aim to build close relationships with their audience and make the audience feel like they are loved and appreciated by the artist. The long shot will help represent the artist as an open, honest person who is forward with her audience and will not hide anything from her fans. It will allow the audience to relate with the artist through recognising locations as well, if the shot is used in the fields then indie fans will be able to relate as they are very outdoory, nature loving people and will see this as a common intrest with the artist as she is clearly the same way.

We will use zooming in as well, this will be used to show the full narrative first and then the face and emotion of the artist as it zooms in, we will use this in scenes such as the pub scene in which she flirts with another boy, it will have all three of them in shot and then zoom in to just the artist and the other boy, cutting the boyfriend out and showing how she is feeling at that time, cutting him off and out of the conversation right in front of him, showing the struggles of their relationship, it will also be used when she is looking at souvenirs to relive the memories, as i zooms in the surrounding will change, making the memories seem real, this is conventional in the indie genre as the narrative is based around real life issues and the artist wants to make the video as realistic and life like as possible to keep the audience engaged in the story, giving them a chance to emphasise with the artist and enjoy the music as they can relate to it, this will represent the artist as regretful of the past and distraught about what she has done, as she is trying to relive and go back in time, we will be able to see this in her facial expressions and the way the scene cuts from her bedroom to the memory like it is being done all over again for the first time, this makes the audience emphasise with her as they can see she is upset over what she has done and clearly loved her boyfriend but made a mistake and will now have to pay for it, which causes emotion within the audience as they connect to the couple and was willing them to do well.

Panning will be used in scenes such as the pub scene in which the new boy interferes with the relationship to show how casually he approaches it and that she almost invites him over and he is not stopped by her at any time, this will help the audience understand that the artist is also interested and throughout the whole pan she does not move or shoo him off, instead she stays and waits for him, this is conventional to the thriller genre as it usually wants to get across to the audience how the artist is feeling at each point of the video and therefore allows them to build a relationship with her, this puts them in the artists shows and they can feel how she is feeling and get where she is coming from, it represents the artist as unfaithful and having a weakness, although this is not a good trait t allows the audience to see that she does in fact have her own flaws, like ever normal person, making her more relatable to the audience and seem more down to earth, this makes her more likable to the audience as they feel like she is achievable to copy and act like, and therefore she becomes an idol as well.

The final shot will be a shallow focus shot, this will be used during the bonfire shot at the beginning where the boyfriend and the artist are close to each other and are loving and caring toward each other, this shows that their only care in the world is each other and they do not care what others think of them, this is conventional as they want the audience to focus on the artist in the indie genre, this allows the audience to not get distracted by the background and therefore makes it more likely the will memorise the artists face and therefore makes it more likely for the artist to become successful, this represents the artist as loving and caring toward her boyfriend, making her seem like a person who is clearly compassionate which the audience like to see, making them like her more as she seems like she has a heart and a personality and is just acting like herself, and not the way she thinks people want her to act, showing she has no secrets to hide from her audience which warms them to her.

The camera shots allow the audience to focus purely on the artist and feel like the artist is the main focus point with shots like close up, zoom in and shallow focus, this makes it seem like the artist is closer to the audience and isn't hiding anything, helping build the relationship between the artist and audience, shots such as long shot and panoramic allow the audience to see the full story and again makes it look the nothing is being hidden as they can see the full surrounding and see that nothing is to be focused on apart from the artist and therefore makes it more likely they will memorise her, this will appeal to the target audience as it makes the artist seem more down to earth and appealing to her audience due to the clear loving and caring personality she shows on camera, also it will make them see that she does not have to hide her personality to impress people and will make them respect her as a person and see her as an idol

Planning lighting and colour

A variety of lighting styles and colours are essential in a music video as it is a key way of keeping the audience engaged, giving the artist a chance to build a relationship with the audience, helping them have an insight into the artists personality and feelings at the time, helping them understand the narrative more and stay engaged in the video due to to following the narrative and the range of colours and lighting used in the scenes help each seem different and unique

In our video we will be using natural lighting to show the natural and down to earth feeling the artist is trying to show off and send as a representation of her to the audience which will help them warm to her and begin to like the way she goes about with her music style and how she acts herself, it also portrays her honesty and how she has nothing to hide from her audience, it will be used during the scenes in which she is looking back and re living her memories, however, it cannot be used for inside scenes as it will be too dark for the camera to pick up and will make it 'grainy' and ruin the camera shot, this shot follows conventional as it represents the artist as a good, honest person and makes the audience enjoy her and respect her as an artist.

Next is lowkey lighting, this can be seen through thee use of fairy lights and will be used in mainly the garden scene (which is made into a make shift cinema), this is conventional as it allows the audience to see the low, dark mood (usually used in relationship related songs in which the artist breaks up with their partner), this helps the audience see the mood they should be in and why the artist is reacting in a certain way, and understand why, this represents the artist as deep and caring and compassionate and not wanting to hurt anybody, therefore the audience see her caring personality and warm toward her. It also makes the artist feel sorry and relate to the artist as they have previously been in the same situation and feel like they are closer to the artist as they have had the same life experiences. This follows convention as it allows the audience to see the true mood of the scene and how the artist feels deep down, therefore they can relate to her and see the artist is just as vulnerable as them.

Finally is key lighting, this will be used in scenes such as the bonfire scene at the beginning and end as the fire would be the key lighting, this is conventional to the indie genre as it is created by a fire (in ours) which represents her burning love and passion for her boyfriend, also the key lighting helps the audience only focus on what they can see as the light can only reach a certain radius which keeps their attention on the artist, helping them memorise the artists face and makes them more likely to be successful, this represents the artist as having a burning passion/love, which only reaches those close to her (represented by the light only reaching a certain distance), this represents how caring and compassionate she is, but also how scared she is of hurt and tries to protect herself. This use of lighting is common within the indie genre as it helps show the audience the artists true feelings and that they are just as afraid as everyone else and are no better than an everyday person. allowing the audience to relate to the artist and create a close bond.

Next is green clothes, the artist will be wearing this during scenes in which she will be close to nature (eg garden scene, fields scene) this is conventional as artists in the indie genre tend to be earth friendly and try to promote peace and kindness, this will represent the artist as down to earth and caring towards others and her environment, this helps the artist be seen as a role model to her audience and a good inspiration and relates to the audience easier due to this. This follows conventions as indie artists are commonly represented as down to earth and caring to make the audience warm toward her, therefore the use of green is a good way to represent this and help the audience bond with her.

Finally the colour red will be used in scenes where there is love between the artist and her boyfriend, but danger to their relationship due to the third boy that our artist flirts with, this will be used in scenes such as the field and pub (scenes in which the couple are loving toward each other until the second boy comes in and out artist begins to flirt with him, which annoys the boyfriend, this is conventional as it shows the truth about relationship and why they break up and complicated at times, this is why the audience can relate to her and understand her point of view, this represents the artist as a real, everyday person and down to earth, representing her as being no different to everyone else and being just as vulnerable as they understand how she feels and emphasise with her and therefore bond with her and understand her better. This is conventional as the artist needs to be related to by their audience, the use of red is common due to the connotation of love and anger, showing the theme of the song and allowing the audience to relate to the artists feelings.

In conclusion, the use of colours and lighting will be essential in the representation of the artist, the use of these will allow the audience to see her true emotions and truly engage into the music video and in turn, relate to the artist and create a close bond with her, helping the longevity of the artists career which is essential to success.

Planning setting and iconography

Locations are extremely important in a music video as it allows the audience to understand the mood they are meant to be feeling and what mood the artist is trying to portray, it also allows the audience to understand the narrative as some places are seen as happier and more upbeat than other places, this can help engage the audience as they can relate to the artists feelings and understand what the artist is going through as they may have had similar experiences. Iconography is used to show the audience what type of mood the scene is meant to be as well, for example, threatening iconography such as a knife or gun can create a tense atmosphere that would not be able to be created any other way, other atmospheres can be created by using other props/iconography.

The first setting is a garden, we chose this as it shows the artists love toward her partner and how relaxed she feels around him as they just lay in her garden and watch movies with each other and just wear loose jumpers etc, this shows how loving they are toward each other and how comfortable they are in each others company, this makes the audience feel as if they know the couple closely and that they know the couples life, it also gives depth to the lyrics of the song as it is about their love for each other and if their love is shown clearly it makes the narrative believable and the audience become more engaged in the song, it is conventional to the genre due to the iconography that will be used such as fairy lights, as well as the love narrative, both are conventional to the indie genre and will help draw in indie fans to our artist. During this scene we wan the couple to be in their back garden watching the films on a projector, enjoying each others company and laughing and playing, clearly showing their affection for each other, we will use shots such as long shots to show the surroundings which is extremely indie as well as close ups to show the true emotion of the artist and make it really believable to the audience. The limitations are that we have to make the area extremely tidy and find a large enough area to build this outdoor cinema, these need to be dealt with as otherwise the shot will not be as effective on creating a relationship with the audience and will not look as conventional to the indie genre. There are a few health and safety risks, we need to make sure that the fairy lights are not in the way of the camera man as it could cause them to trip over if they are filming and cause serious injury, The weather may affect us as we want it to be a sunny/warm day to portray the happiness, if this is not possible we may have to wait until another day or even film it indoors, although this is not preferable or as effective.

The second shot that is in the garden is the bonfire scene in which the artist and her partner are again in the garden, but this time in front of a fire, representing their burning passion in their love which is forever lasting, this allows the audience to create a relationship with the couple as they admire them and enjoy seeing the couple happy and having fun, this again gives depth to the song, showing their love and affection toward each other, like the song says they have, in this shot there will be the couple eating marshmallows which they toast on the fire, snuggling up close to each other to really show their love, we will use shallow shots to show it is only them two that need to be focused on as well as showing that the couples only care in the world is each other and that they are devoted to each other, also, shot reverse shots may be used to show each partners face during the scene to show their true emotion and prove to the audience their love, this however will need to be filmed in a garden that is tidy so that there are no distractions for the audience, as well ass one that has room or equipment for a bonfire as otherwise it will be difficult to create. There are lots of safety hazards in this scene, the major one is that the artist and partner need to stay away from the fire so that they do not burn themselves on the bonfire and cause serious harm to themselves which could be permanent damage to them. The weather must not be rainy as otherwise it will be difficult to keep the fire going and will completely ruin the scene, if this happens will will have to find a cover that will stay out of screen and make sure the fire is not affected as well as the artists, as otherwise it creates an effect as if it is a sad atmosphere, whereas we want the opposite.

The third scene we will use is the field, this will represent the free spirit of the artist and how their love is showcased to the world and not just indoors in their own private area, helping the audience appreciate that they are not scared of what others think of them and only care about each other, this is where the signs of struggle start to show however as the artist flirts with another man, the person who is taking the picture of her and her partner whilst they are enjoying a picnic and is meant to be done so they can keep the memory forever, this is represented by the lyrics where there are clear signs of struggle within the relationship, this annoys the boy and there will be slight signs of breaking up, but not completely definite, we will use shots such as the two shot, when the new boy and artist are talking/flirting, as well as when the boyfriend and artist are in shot, secondly, we will use shallow shot again, before the second boy gets involved, to show that the couple are only focused on each other and couldn't care less about whats going on around them, the only limitation is that it is in a public area, we need to make sure others do not get into the shot and ruin the atmosphere. Health and safety hazards are to watch out for any sharp objects that may be left on the floor and injure the actors whilst they sit down, the weather should not be raining as it is not a massively sad shot, also, not too sunny as it is not a really happy and loving shot, is it is sunny we can just edit this to become more dull when creating the video on final cut.

The next scene is the kitchen scene, this represents them as again comfortable with each other due to being in the house together, but also a serious, dedicated couple, doing household tasks that married couples or serious couples participate in, making the audience believe that the couple are serious and will stay together and possibly move to the next stage, during this scene the couple will be making cakes together, joking around play fighting, etc, making a mess, shots such as long shots to show the couple creating the cake and mid shots to show the simple actions they are doing, the simplicity will show what they are doing with each other and that they love each other, the limitations are that we need to make sure that the kitchen is an open one so that we can film them from whatever angle we need and whatever is most effective, also we need to make sure the shot is done in the first time as lots of mess will be made, which we need to make sure is done during, not before the shot as it will look bad in the shot of the music video, we need to be aware of any sharp cutlery in the kitchen and watch for dangerous equipment in the kitchen, the weather is no worry as it is indoors and will not affect us.

This scene will be set in the pub, this will be the final scene set at a local pub named 'the gardeners arms' it has a view over London which is a great setting for the love story as it is a beautiful setting, this represents the maturity of the couple but also the free spirit of wanting to be out and about, where they can enjoy themselves and show their affection in public, in this shot they will be on the outside of the pub, drinking, and then the boy that caused disruption earlier will turn up out of the blue and start talking to the girl, we will use a POV shot to show the girl spotting him and watching him, allowing the audience to relate to her, due to seeing it from her point of view, and therefore the audience can understand more where she s coming from, also a panoramic shot could be used to track the new boy as he is walking up to her, this shows the audience his confidence and audacity even though he knows the boyfriend is there, the audience can see what is happening as he walks up and how he acts in body language and facial expressions, this causes the boyfriend to storm off in anger of the girlfriend talking to other boys and end the relationship due to her flirting with other boys, the limitations are that others may get in shot due to it being a public area and they may ruin the shot, we want the audience to focus purely on the new boy and couple and not look at extras. We have to make sure no glass is broken during this shot and doesn't injure our actors, this could cause serious harm to them and needs to be watched, the weather needs to be dull, if it is raining before the new boy turns up it does not represent the mood we want to portray and if it is sunny then it is seen as a happy mood, even when the boyfriend is angry, which we do not want, we will use final cut pro to edit the look of the weather.

We will be using lots of iconography as souvenirs to flashback to memories of the couples activities with each other, all these souvenirs will be placed in a souvenir box, this will show how she treasures the memories they had and that she wanted every moment to last forever with him, the audience see the love she had for him and how she treasured everything he done for her. This is conventional as it shows the love they had for each other and helps show the caring nature they both shared.

The next is a guitar, this is used when he is teaching her how to play and is singing a love song to her, this shows not only the talent of him but also the closeness they have, he is showing her something that she will know for the rest of her life, it is as if he is part of the family and will leave a forever lasting memory every time she plays guitar, showing their desires to stay together forever and although that was there intentions they do not stay as a couple, this is conventional as it is the most indie instrument there is, it is used as a representation of love and romance and is perfect for a music video like ours as this is what we want to portray.

The third piece of iconography is fairy lights, this is used in a lot of scenes when they are happy together and are enjoying each others company, it represents the dream like/story like romance tale which they are going through, this makes the audience relate to them as they all dream of a story like love story which they are forever happy and admire the couple because of this and the audience hope that they do well to keep hope for their own dreams of this, they are conventional as they are child like and very fairy tale like which is common within the indie genre, which is based on dreams and hopes in love, which is why so many in the audience can relate to the genre and enjoy it so much.
This piece of iconography is a picnic basket, this is used in the scene over the fields where the relationship first shows signs of cracking, this is another fairy tale like piece of iconography as it is representative of a relationship in which the couple are extremely loved up and go out for romantic picnics etc and are attached to the hip, this is what a lot of indie genre fans dream of and want a partner who will take them out to random picnics, etc, this is conventional as the indie genre is constantly selling the dream of a perfect relationship in which both partners are extremely in love and only care about each other and no one else in the world.

This planning has allowed me to understand why we are using each scene and how it is commonly use din the indie genre, this then allows us to use each convention to its full potential and really create a conventional indie music video, and attracting a wider indie fan base for our artist, making her more successful and possibly bring in more conventions that are commonly used. I am no more aware of the safety hazards during filming that we will have to watch out for and make sure that all members are protected from as it can cause serious harm to our artist and others, this will be avoided by thorough safety checks in each scene before filming to prevent possible injuries.
